Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) will reportedly not be resigning on Saturday morning over a recently surfaced racist photo from his old medical school yearbook.
The Democratic Party of Virginia tweeted that it has decided to “let Governor Northam do the correct thing and resign this morning” but that it had “gotten word he will not do so this morning.”
Northam has faced mounting demands for his resignation after photos from his Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook surfaced showing a man wearing blackface posing next to a man in a Ku Klux Klan outfit. Northam graduated from the school in 1984.
He apologized for the photo on Friday, indicating that he was one of the men pictured, but he did not specify which person he was. However, New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin tweeted Saturday morning that Northam now believes he may not be in the photo and does not want to resign before determining who the people in the picture are.
In a statement, the Virginia Democrats said Lt. Gov Justin Fairfax should take over for Northam to “heal Virginia’s wounds and move us forward.”
On Friday night, Northam issued a video apologizing for the incident but said he planned to serve out the remainder of his term.
